Scoring and score interpretation

Band scores from 1 to 9, in whole or half bands.

  • You receive a band for each skill and an overall band.
  • The overall band is the average of the four skills, rounded to the nearest half band.
  • Universities and visa authorities set their own minimum bands — check what your course requires.

Orbit does not publish minimum scores for universities — each university and visa authority sets its own. Check the requirement for your course.

05

How to prepare

  1. 1Take a timed diagnostic test first so your plan targets your weakest skill.
  2. 2In Reading, practise moving on from hard questions and returning later.
  3. 3Plan Writing Task 2 for five minutes before you write — structure earns marks.
  4. 4Speak in full, natural answers in the Speaking test; there are no trick questions.
  5. 5Check which IELTS version your university or visa requires before booking.
