A DHS final rule replaces 'duration of status' for F students with a fixed period of admission tied to the programme end date on the Form I-20, up to four years.
What it means
Previously, F students were admitted for 'duration of status' — as long as they maintained their student status.
Under the final rule, new F students are admitted for a fixed period up to the programme length on their I-20, not exceeding four years, plus 30 days before the programme starts and 30 days after it ends.
Students who need more time must apply for an extension of stay with USCIS, or depart and seek a new admission. Speak to your school's designated school official first.

Students entering the United States in F-1 status, and current F students planning longer programmes or extensions.
